Privacy policy
Last updated 16 October 2026
The short version
- Kirzo is a learning app for Junior High School students in Ghana. Most of the people who use it are children, so we collect as little as we can.
- We never sell your data and we never show ads. There are no advertising or tracking tools in Kirzo.
- If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must agree before we use your data. They do this by confirming a code we send to their phone.
- Your teachers and guardians can see how you are doing in your lessons. They can never read your chats with Ananse.
- You or your guardian can delete your account at any time, and everything linked to it is deleted straight away.
The rest of this page explains the details. If anything is unclear, email [email protected].
Who we are
Kirzo is run by Yebs Technologies, a company in Ghana (“Kirzo”, “we”, “us”). We are the data controller for the personal data described here, under Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).
This policy covers the Kirzo app and the websites at kirzo.app. It applies to:
- students who learn with Kirzo
- parents and guardians who give consent and follow a child’s progress
- school admins and teachers who use the Kirzo school dashboard
Children and guardian consent
Under Act 843, the personal data of a child (anyone under 18) is special personal data. So:
- Students under 18 sign up with the phone number of a parent or guardian. We send that number a code by SMS. When the guardian confirms the code, they give consent for their child to use Kirzo. A child can have up to two guardians, and either one can give consent.
- A student can choose “I’ll add it later” and start using the app before a guardian confirms. The app keeps asking until a guardian has confirmed. If a sign-up is never finished, we delete it after 7 days.
- Students aged 18 or over confirm their own phone number instead.
- A guardian can withdraw consent at any time from the parent home in the app. This closes and deletes the child’s account.
We don’t ask for a student’s real name. Your username is shown to other students, so we suggest you don’t use your full real name in it.
What we collect and why
When you create an account
| Data | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Username and password | So you can sign in. Your password is stored scrambled (hashed), so nobody at Kirzo can read it. |
| Date of birth | To know whether a guardian must give consent. |
| A guardian’s phone number (under 18), or your own (18 and over) | For consent, to help you get back into your account, and, for guardians, a weekly progress text. |
| Your class, term and daily goal | To show you the right lessons. |
| Your school, if you add one | For school rankings, and so your teachers can follow your progress if your school uses Kirzo. |
When you learn and play
| Data | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Your answers, lesson progress, test scores, XP, streak, medals and Kirzo Tokens | To run the lessons and games, track what you have mastered, and suggest what to study next. |
| Duels, leagues and tournaments you join | To run live games and weekly tables. |
| Your notification choices and reminder time | So we only send the reminders you want. |
| Questions you report as wrong | So our reviewers can fix them. |
When you use Ananse, the AI tutor
| Data | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Your messages to Ananse and its replies | To answer you and keep the conversation going. Your chats stay in your account until you delete it. |
| Photos you send with Snap | To read the question and help you solve it. We remove the location and other hidden details from the photo before anyone sees it, and we don’t keep the photo. We keep the text of the question and the solution, so you can look at them again. |
| Written (theory) answers | So Ananse can mark them and give feedback. |
There is more about how Ananse works below.
From your phone or browser
| Data | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| A notification token | To send the reminders and duel invites you allow. You can turn notifications off at any time. |
| The type of device or browser, and its IP address, when you sign in | To keep you signed in safely and spot sign-ins that aren’t you. |
| A few simple app events, such as “the app was opened” or “a term pack was downloaded” | To check that Kirzo works well, especially offline. These events contain no free text and no personal details. |
From parents and guardians
- Your phone number, which you confirm by SMS code. You sign in with it, with no password.
- If you buy a Family Plan, Google Play handles the payment. We receive a purchase record, but never your card or mobile money details.
From school admins and teachers
- Your username, phone number, school and the classes and subjects you teach.
- Assignments, questions, lessons and announcements you create, and the marks you give.
- A record of what you do with students’ data, kept in an audit log (see Security).
- If your school buys a licence, Moolre handles the payment. We keep a record of the payment, but not the payment details.
When you contact us
If you email us, we keep your message and our reply so we can help you.
What we never do
- We never sell or rent personal data.
- We never show ads, and we don’t use advertising IDs. The Android app blocks the advertising ID.
- We don’t use analytics or tracking tools from other companies.
- We don’t collect your location, your contacts or your real name.
- We don’t use your data to build a profile for marketing.
Ananse, the AI tutor
Ananse is powered by Claude, an AI made by Anthropic. To answer a student, we send Anthropic:
- the student’s username and class
- the message, the photo (for Snap) or the answer being marked
- the question or lesson it is about, and the recent conversation
Before a message goes anywhere, we remove phone numbers and email addresses from it. If a message suggests a student might be upset or in danger, Ananse doesn’t send it to the AI. Instead it replies with a caring message that tells the student to talk to a trusted adult.
Every reply from Ananse is checked before the student sees it. Replies that are blocked by that check, and messages Ananse marks as off-topic, unsafe or sharing personal details, can be reviewed by Kirzo staff to keep students safe and improve Ananse. We delete blocked replies after 90 days.
Anthropic processes this data only to give us the answer. It does not use it to train its models.
Ananse can make mistakes, so students should check important answers with their teacher. Parents can switch Ananse off for their child from the parent home.
Who can see your data
You can see your own progress, chats and history in the app.
Your parents or guardians can see your streak, how many days and minutes you were active this week, your XP, your mastery in each subject, your BECE readiness, your school and class, and assignments that are due or missed. They see how often you used Ananse, but never your chats.
Your school, if you join a class in a school that uses Kirzo. Your teachers and school admins can see your username, class, progress, scores, streak and when you were last active. They never see your phone number, your guardians’ phone numbers, your date of birth, your Ananse chats or your Snap photos.
Other students can see your username, profile frame, XP, league, medals you pin, and your school name on rankings. They can’t message you: there is no chat between students, and duels use emoji reactions only.
Kirzo staff can see account and learning data when they need to: to help you when you ask, to check reported content, to review flagged Ananse conversations, or to keep the service safe. Staff accounts are limited to the people who need them.
The law. We may share data if the law requires it, or to protect a child from serious harm.
Services we use
We use a few trusted companies to run Kirzo. Each one gets only what it needs to do its job, and must keep the data safe.
| Service | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Powers Ananse (the AI tutor, Snap, theory marking, study plans) | United States |
| Moolre | Sends SMS codes and weekly texts, and handles school payments | Ghana |
| Google (Google Play, Firebase Cloud Messaging) | Delivers the app and push notifications on Android, and handles Family Plan purchases | United States and other countries |
| Expo | Passes push notifications from our servers to Google for delivery | United States |
| Our cloud hosting provider | Stores the Kirzo database and runs our servers | May be outside Ghana |
If you use Kirzo in a web browser, the company that makes the browser (for example Google, Mozilla or Apple) delivers its push notifications.
Data sent outside Ghana
Some of these services keep or process data outside Ghana. When this happens, we only use companies that protect personal data to a standard similar to Act 843, and we send only what is needed.
How long we keep data
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account, progress, chats, Snap questions and solutions | Until you or your guardian delete the account |
| A sign-up that is never finished (no date of birth or confirmed phone) | 7 days |
| Snap photos | Not kept. Each photo is used once to answer the question |
| Ananse replies blocked by our safety check | 90 days |
| Our log of SMS messages sent (with the phone number partly hidden) | 30 days |
| Payment records | As long as the law requires for tax and accounting. They are no longer linked to a deleted account |
When an account is deleted, everything that belongs to it is deleted at the same time. Content a teacher wrote for their school, such as questions and announcements, stays with the school without the teacher’s name.
Your rights
Under Act 843, you (or your guardian, if you are under 18) can:
- see the personal data we hold about you
- correct data that is wrong
- delete your account and data
- object to how we use your data, or ask us to stop
- withdraw consent at any time (guardians)
How to use them
- Delete an account: in the app, go to Settings → Password & recovery → Delete account. Parents can delete a child’s account from the parent home. You can also use kirzo.app/delete-account.
- Switch Ananse off for a child, set the reminder time or withdraw consent: parents can do these from the parent home in the app.
- Turn notifications off: in the app’s Settings, or in your phone’s settings.
- Anything else: email [email protected]. We may ask you to prove the account is yours, for example with a code sent to the account’s phone number. We reply as quickly as we can, and always within the time Act 843 allows.
If you are not happy with how we handled your request, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission of Ghana.
Security
- All data travels encrypted between the app and our servers.
- Passwords are hashed, so they can’t be read, even by us.
- Repeated wrong passwords lock sign-in for a while.
- Phone numbers are shown only partly (for example +233 24 ••• 4567) in the app and in our logs.
- Everything school admins and teachers do with students or content is recorded in an audit log that Kirzo can check.
- Kirzo staff access is limited to the people who need it.
No system is perfectly secure. If we learn of a data breach that affects you, we will tell you, and the Data Protection Commission, as the law requires.
Notifications
Kirzo only sends notifications you allow. We don’t send reminders between 9 pm and 6 am Ghana time, and you choose which kinds you get. A guardian can choose the time of the daily reminder.
Cookies and storage
The Kirzo app stores your sign-in session on your device so you stay signed in, and it saves downloaded lessons so you can learn offline. These are needed for the app to work.
The kirzo.app website uses no cookies and no tracking.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top. If a change matters, for example a new kind of data or a new service, we will tell guardians and users in the app before it takes effect, and ask for consent again where the law requires it.
